DJ Tips in under a minute: Don’t let the first dance be ruined. I bought a song from ITunes that was corrupted and only 41 seconds long, and of course it had to be the first dance song! I saw the full track time in ITunes and on my laptop in Serato at the gig, BUT I never listened to the whole song or looked at the waveform which was cut short. I have faith that when I buy a song from ITunes, it will work and play so I have just gone with the flow of it but no more. I will now listen to the complete track when buying important songs from ANY source. I will also verify the waveform as being complete..

Whenever I get a new version of Serato DJ, I always keep the older version loaded on my laptop, just in case the newest version gets buggy or has problems. It’s also a good rule of thumb to practice with any new versions before a gig, don’t download a new version and then go to your gig without checking out all changes first. If a new software version comes out on a Friday or Saturday, I won’t try it until Monday so as not to jeopardize my events.

I have a main drive of music and a back-up that both go to gigs with me, and now I have a third drive that I am moving to my mother in laws house for safe keeping. You should have a drive away from your residence so as to be extra safe if there is a disaster at your home, hopefully it will never come to that but having the back-up is always a good idea.

I just bought a Bluetooth speaker that is very loud and now will bring it to all meetings so that I can have clients hear tracks as well as realize that I am about adapting to all situations, and being prepared!

DJ Tips in under a minute become an ordained minister. I was ordained back in 2003 because I worked for a yacht company and needed to be available to perform weddings on the boats. I have done 3 friends weddings and now 3 emergency weddings where the minister either didn’t make it to the wedding, or as in this past Sunday; passed out and was taken away in an ambulance. I tell all my clients that in a pinch I can stand in and legally perform the ceremony and sign the license. It’s an added bonus for the DJ to be ordained, and PRICELESS when the DJ has to save the day!!!

I also tear down my laptop/hard drive/headphones first when the gig has ended and get those things OUT of the room and locked up in my van, that way I am not worried about where things are and if random drunks may grab something on their way out of the party..

I try to check out the local Top 40 stations in my area about twice a month, sometimes just once a month, to see what is getting played. Knowing the local tracks will help you to have those songs ready at different gigs. DJ Tips in under a minute don’t have an ending time on your receptions. It was brought to my attention that sometimes wedding invitations will say reception 5-10 and they shouldn’t have the end time because it creates an expectation of how long guests will stay. I agree that if I know something goes from a start to end time I will usually watch the clock to help determine when I will leave. Most receptions have the end time somewhere outside the room, and now I think maybe they shouldn’t. Just a thought for you to share with your clients.
